"As a former banker in Statesboro, I will tell you that choosing a bank is difficult. There are many very good banks, but it really depends upon what you need from a product and service level. Do you need loans, just basic checking, business accounts, money market accounts and CD’s, a banking network for access to your funds while you travel, low fees, etc. Many do a few of these things well, but most don’t do them all extremely well, and it depends on a lot of banking factors that aren’t typically known to the public. Do they need money, do they need loans? What does the bank need to position themselves appropriately in the market. I have accounts at Citizens Bank of the South, Synovus, Truist, AgSouth, Core Credit Union, Queensborough, American Express Savings/checking, and an out of town credit union. They are all great, but each has a specific niche. My best advice is pick two, and get to know a specific banker and not just the bank. The banker relationship is what is most important. A seasoned banker who can make a decision and doesn’t have to go to a loan committee or an outside board for decisions is important for lending, and a banker who can help you with your deposit accounts when/if you need them is equally as important. Pick two and develop a relationship with a banker at each and you can always work with them to find what is best for your needs at that time. Again, most all of them are good and you can do well at any of them." Shannon Middleton
